Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester
What is a BPAT license?
A Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester (BPAT) license is an occupational license issued by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ). Professionals who hold this license are qualified to assess the Installation and application of backflow prevention assemblies. These license holders are authorized to test and repair backflow prevention assemblies on residential and commercial, potable and non-potable water systems. Only testers employed fulltime by a certified Fireline contractor may test or repair backflow assemblies considered to be part fireline system.

- Have 2 years of credible work experience
- Complete a criminal history background check
- Have a High School diploma or GED
- A High School diploma or GED may substitute one year of credible work experience with certain approved TCEQ courses or college credits
- Complete a 40-HR BPAT course, including a “Hands-On” exam
- Submit an application and pay the fee through the TCEQ website
- After TCEQ authorization, take the written portion of the BPAT exam at a TCEQ approved computer-based testing center

Education
- All BPAT license holders must complete 24 hours of continuing education training every 3 years for renewal
- 8 of those hours must be practical skills training
Renewal
- BPAT license must be renewed with the TCEQ every 3 years
- Complete continuing education hours prior to expiration
- Submit renewal application, criminal history attestation and fee to the TCEQ

- Specific criminal history can negatively impact or determine a person's eligibility to receive or renew an occupational license from TCEQ. Completing courses provided by Brazos Valley Water Protection in no way guarantees a person's eligibility to test for, be awarded or to renew an occupational license.
- TCEQ RG-521 contains the current guidelines that outline the consequences of having criminal convictions on your ability to obtain and hold and occupational license.
- Other guidance on occupational license denials, warnings, suspensions or revocations is provided to the TCEQ in 30 Tex. Admin. Code ยง 30.33.
- For those with any felony or misdemeanor convictions or deferred adjudications, please contact TCEQ Licensing Division for more information regarding a criminal history evaluation letter.
If you have failed to consult with the TCEQ or exercise your rights for review prior to this course, and are determined later to be ineligible for a license due to criminal history, you are not entitled to any refund or reimbursement by Brazos Valley Water Protection for course costs, fees associated with application or license, travel expenses or any other incidental expenses associated with attending this course.
